Landscapes of the Dow
This series uses the data from the DJIA (Dow Jones Industrial Average) to form a 'mountain' for each week. Some earlier works are included here that were daily charts of the Dow. Those daily charts also connect with the How to Be Human series.
This work encourages the examination of the hidden and silent landscapes embedded in the DJIA (I realize the DJIA is less valuable as an indicator than the S&P and out of favor compared to the Nasdaq). How have corporate profits and short-sighted emphasis on shareholder value trumped vision and investments in long term solutions for humanity. These mountains exist because of tiny bargains, and bigger bargains we make.
These works preceded the financial Crisis of 2008. I am still fascinated by these landscapes and often look to markets and market data as a type of litmus for our shared culture. I am also very interested in my current work (see GIFT project), to redefine the core value of art making, and collection. I am less interested in toppling capitalist market structures and more interested in creating new anti market spaces that offer possibilities.
